The Road to Kentucky Derby 153 will get underway Saturday with a field of nine 2-year-olds entered in the Iroquois Stakes (Grade III) at Churchill Downs.

Horses who catch the eye today may be overtaken by horses we haven’t even seen yet, either later this fall, or as the trail heats up next spring.

A cast of nine promising two-year-old horses will run one-mile over the famed Churchill Downs dirt oval in Saturday’s $300,000 Iroquois (G3).

The 2026-27 Road to the Kentucky Derby kicks off on Saturday with the running of the $300,000 Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs, where the 2027 Kentucky Derby (G1) will take place roughly eight months from now.

The Iroquois is named after the first U.S.-bred winner of England’s famed Derby at Epsom in 1881.

A compact field of five two-year-old horses will speed seven panels on the dirt in Sunday’s $300,000 Del Mar Futurity (G1).

Experience proved overrated in Saturday’s $1.25 million Travers (G1), as Leading Change stepped up to win the prestigious three-year-old event at Saratoga in his third career start.

Hall of Famers Curlin and A.P. Indy never ran in the Travers (G1), but their influence looms large in the pedigrees of Saturday’s contenders at Saratoga.
