Please note that Right to Party has been scratched form the 2026 Kentucky Derby, as of May 1.

Who is Right to Party?

Right to Party is the race's most improbable entrant and arguably its most interesting story. A maiden who closed at 38-1 to finish second in the Wood Memorial, he's never won a stakes race and has never started outside of Aqueduct. His trainer Kenny McPeek won the 2024 Derby with Mystik Dan at a big price, and McPeek has an almost supernatural ability to land these big-race coups with closers. His jockey is Chris Elliott, just 19 years old and the son of Stewart Elliott, who rode Smarty Jones to the Derby and Preakness in 2004. Constitution by Tapit gives him a legitimate pedigree case for the distance. But the reality is that no maiden has won the Derby since Brokers Tip in 1933, and this horse would need to improve dramatically against the deepest field he's faced, on a track he's never seen, in his first start outside New York. He's a story, not a bet.

Family Tree

His sire Constitution earned $1,031,596 with four wins from eight starts on fast dirt, by the champion Tapit with dam Baffled carrying Distorted Humor bloodlines. Right to Party's dam is Havin' a Party, by Emcee with dam Chimichurri (Elusive Quality line), bred in New York. This cross combines Tapit's classic pedigree with quality racing genetics.

Racing Record

Right to Party is 1-for-4 with one place and two shows through April 4, 2026:

  • Dec. 13, 2025, at Aqueduct: Finished 3rd in MSW six furlongs at 8-1 odds
  • Jan. 10, 2026, at Aqueduct: Won maiden race 1 mile at 5-2 odds by 1 1/2 lengths (jockey Reylu Gutierrez)
  • Feb. 28, 2026, at Aqueduct: Finished 3rd in stakes 1 mile at 9-1 odds
  • April 4, 2026, at Aqueduct: Finished 2nd in stakes 1 1/8 miles at 39-1 odds (1 1/4 lengths behind winner)

What Matters

Right to Party broke through with his maiden victory Jan. 10, then immediately competed in stakes races, proving competitive at higher levels. His April 4 runner-up finish in a stakes race at 1 1/8 miles shows he belongs in the company of quality runners.

Caution

With only one victory from four races, Right to Party remains inconsistent. Like most of the Derby contenders, he hasn't raced at the Kentucky Derby distance of 1 1/4 miles. His recent efforts were at long odds, suggesting he's not proven to be a favorite in major prep races yet.
