Kathy Ritvo

Born into a horse racing family, Kathy has been training on her own since 1987. Kathy Ritvo took over the training responsibilities of her husband’s, Tim Ritvo, stable after Tim took a job in race track management in the fall of 2010. Kathy has had over 150 winners and seven stakes winners including a win in the Calder Breeders’ Cup. Mucho Macho Man would be her first starter in the Kentucky Derby.

Rajiv Maragh

Maragh grew up in the horse racing industry in his native Jamaica. Maragh’s father was a jockey but he forced Rajiv to earn his high school diploma before he was allowed to ride a racehorse. His first winner came aboard Pricedale Kid on February 1, 2004 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing was founded in 2009 when Dean and Patti Reeves purchased two colts. In July 2010, Reeves purchased a majority interest in Kentucky Derby contender Mucho Macho Man from Dream Team Racing Stable. Dream Team Racing LLC is a thoroughbred racing partnership group that was founded to provide affordable partnership opportunities in the thoroughbred industry.

Pedigree

A limited number of black-type performers in recent generations and a conspicuously high number of speed influences highlight Mucho Macho Man’s pedigree.

Mucho Macho Man was bred in Florida by John D. and Carole A. Rio

Sire Macho Uno, the juvenile colt champion of 2000, clinched his title by winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs. He narrowly held off Point Given, who went on to win the Preakness S. (G1) and Belmont S. (G1) the following year. Macho Uno failed to make the classics, but did go on to win the Pennsylvania Derby (G3) and Massachusetts H. (G2) at nine furlongs. His best finish in three attempts at 1 1/4 miles was a third in the Suburban H. (G1).

Macho Uno’s leading two-turn offspring have been Stephen Foster H. (G1) winner and Preakness runner-up Macho Again, Grade 1-winning juvenile Wicked Style, and Canadian classic winner Harlem Rocker.

Mucho Macho Man is the first starter produced by Ponche de Leona (Ponche), who peaked at two winning the six-furlong Anoakia S. at Santa Anita. Though she placed in two other stakes, she competed in claiming races before the Anoakia and at the end of her career.

Broodmare sire Ponche won five minor stakes at Calder, and has been honored with a six-furlong listed stakes named for him at that Miami course. Mucho Macho Man is the only stakes winner to date produced by one of Ponche’s daughters.

Mucho Macho Man’s fourth dam was the stakes-winning Gal Sal (Blasting Signal), whose stakes-winning half-sister House of Cards (Promised Land) founded a far more prolific family. Mucho Macho Man and Ponche de Leona are the only two stakes winners produced from the descendants of Gal Sal.
