Jeff Bonde

Trainer

Bonde grew up in a family full of horse farriers but decided to follow a different path and took out his trainer’s license in 1973 at age 19. Bonde has become a formidable force on the west coast and won his first career Grade 1 when Smiling Tiger scored in the Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar. He has trained numerous graded winners such as Sierra Sunset, High Tech Friend, Epic Honor, and Red’s Sky.

Calvin Borel

Jockey

Borel was born in a small town in South Louisiana and he knew from a very early age he wanted to become a jockey. Borel captured the hearts of millions of Americans when he won his first career Kentucky Derby in 2007 on Street Sense. He followed that up two years later with a rail skimming ride on longshot Mine That Bird to win the 2009 edition. In 2010, he scored his third Kentucky Derby victory in four years aboard Super Saver. Nicknamed “Bo-Rail” for his daring rides along the inside fence, Borel is today’s “king” of the Kentucky Derby.

Edward "Rusty" Brown, Victor Flores, Henry Hernandez

Owner

Majority owner Edward “Rusty” Brown fell in love with horses at a very early age while attending races with his father at Saratoga Race Course near his hometown. Brown’s first job was cleaning the stables for an owner and this is when he realized his dream of owning racehorses. Victor Flores, much like Brown, attended races with his father at age 11 at Santa Anita. The group was linked together by trainer Jeff Bonde and Twice the Appeal is their first major stakes winner.

Pedigree

Bred in Kentucky by John T.L. Jones III, Twice the Appeal is by Successful Appeal, who isn’t a preferable sire for Kentucky Drby hopefuls, but broodmare sire Cormorant is a stamina influence capable of providing foundation for the 1 ¼-mile distance 

Successful Appeal is by Valid Appeal, who is best known for passing speed to his offspring; Successful Appeal receives plenty of speed from his dam, the Fortunate Prospect mare Successful Dancer, who is also the dam of Canadian Grade 2-winning sprinter True to Tradition 

Successful Appeal has been represented by many sprinters at stud, but his son Closing Argument finished second in the 2005 Kentucky Derby and he’s also responsible for Grade 2 hero Successful Dan, who finished first in the 2010 Clark H. (G1) before being disqualified to second and is being pointed toward the Stephen Foster (G1) this summer

Twice the Appeal is out of Double Boarded, a mare by the His Majesty stallion Cormorant, sire of 1994 Kentucky Derby winner Go For Gin; champion three-year-old filly Saratoga Dew; Acorn (G1) and Black-Eyed Susan (G2) vixen Grecian Flight; millionaire Gander, who placed in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Woodward, Whitney and Donn 

Double Boarded raced primarily in sprints during her undistinguished racing career, but she is also the dam of Board Elliogible, a multiple stakes-winning filly at two turns who finished second in the Ladies H. (G2) and fourth in the Personal Ensign (G1), both at 1 ¼ miles; Board Elligble made all but the first two of her 36 starts at two turns; Double Boarded has three stakes-winning siblings, two of which favored sprint distances

 

Cormorant is the broodmare sire of Breeders Cup Sprint (G1) and Met Mile (G1) winner Silver Train and Grade 1-winning sprinter Bishop Court Hill, but he’s been represented by a number of more modest stakes winners at routes, including Grade 2 scorers Meadow Flight and R Lady Joy 

Twice the Appeal has stamina concerns on the top side of his pedigree and may prove better suited for distances up to nine furlongs, but Successful Appeal’s offspring can’t be dismissed at longer distances when combined with the right mare and broodmare sire Cormorant provides hope for Twice the Appeal
