Pedigree

Commanding Curve is from the final crop of millionaire Master Command, a regally-bred son of A.P. Indy who died at the young age of eight.

Master Command was a late developer who didn't break his maiden until the fall of his sophomore season. At four, he progressed into the graded stakes ranks, capturing the William Donald Schaefer Handicap and the Meadowlands Breeders' Cup Stakes. Master Command reached the peak of his powers as a five-year-old, when romping in the New Orleans, Mineshaft and National Jockey Club Handicaps. He never had an opportunity to try 1 1/4 miles, but given his dominance at 1 1/8 miles -- and his pedigree -- he likely would have handled the classic distance.

Being by A.P. Indy, and from the powerhouse family of Allez France, Honor in War, Al Mamoon, La Gueriere, Icon Project and Munnings, Master Command was an attractive stallion prospect. He got off to a promising start at stud, siring 2012 Hollywood Derby hero Unbridled Command and multiple Grade 3 victor Master Rick in his very first crop. Sadly, he died in the midst of his third season at stud, not long after Commanding Curve was conceived.

Commanding Curve's dam, who is actually named Mother, is likely to add more speed into his pedigree. Both of her wins came at six furlongs, and her only other runner, Hot Roots, placed in a small stakes at that same sprint distance at Penn National.

Mother is by the blueblood Lion Hearted (not to be confused with the similarly-named Lion Heart, the 2004 Derby runner-up). Lion Hearted was a Phipps Stable homebred son of Storm Cat and Grade 1 queen Cadillacing, a full sister to the mighty Easy Goer. Not quite living up to his exalted pedigree on the racetrack, Lion Hearted competed mostly in allowance sprints, and his best stakes results were seconds in the 1999 Riva Ridge and Amsterdam.

Lion Hearted has carved out a solid record as a regional sire in Maryland, with most of his notable stakes winners coming in the Mid-Atlantic. His only graded winner, Control System, landed the Grade 3 Cicada at Aqueduct in 2007.

Mother was produced by the Topsider mare Proper Lassie, who is also the dam of stakes-placed Professor Biggs, a course record-setter over 1 1/16 miles on the Penn National turf.

Commanding Curve comes from the family of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Proper Reality. Hero of the 1988 Arkansas Derby, Proper Reality was an honorable fourth to Winning Colors, Forty Niner and Risen Star in that year's Kentucky Derby. He went on to win the lucrative Illinois Derby, and at four in 1989, he garnered the Met Mile and Philip H. Iselin.
