Tony Dutrow grew up in the racing business in Hagerstown, Maryland and as a boy helped out at his father's barn. Having learned to condition horses, he took out his training license and earned his first win in 1975 at Delaware Park Racetrack. He worked with his father for several years then beginning in 1985 with trainer Bobby Frankel in California until going out on his own in 1987.
A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Jose began riding horses on his father’s farm in Mexico and recorded his first career win on a quarter horse in his native country. He has won numerous graded stakes during his career including the $400,000 Manhattan Handicap (GI) aboard Mission Approved in 2011. Jose will be aboard Giant Finish in his first ever mount in the Kentucky Derby.
Sunrise Stables (Andy Cohen), Gary Tolchin, Aubrey Flanagan & Bob Smith
Sunrise Stables majority owner, Andrew Cohen, bred Giant Finish who races in partnership with Gary Tolchin, Bob Smith, and Aubrey Flanagan. Cohen has experienced the Kentucky Derby before as a member of the IEAH partnership group that sent out 2008 Kentucky Derby Winner Big Brown. Cohen is also the owner of Giant Finish’s sire Frost Giant who stands at stud in Cohen’s home state of New York where Giant Finish was bred.
Frost Giant--Apocalyptic, by Hickman Creek
Giant Finish is from the first crop of Frost Giant, a regally-bred son of Giant's Causeway.
Frost Giant scored his two biggest career victories at 1 1/4 miles, in the 2008 Suburban Handicap on dirt and the 2006 Kilternan Stakes in Ireland on turf.
Off to a fast start at stud, Frost Giant has also sired stakes winner West Hills Giant, runner-up in the Gotham, and Kelli Got Frosty, twice a stakes winner in New York-bred company.
Giant Finish is the only notable performer produced by his dam, Apocalyptic. But one of her daughters, Apocalyptical, is responsible for dual stakes-winning sprinter Weekend Hideaway.
Apocalyptic is by Hickman Creek, a beautifully-bred, if undistinguished, son of 1977 Triple Crown legend Seattle Slew.
Apocalyptic's dam, Sign Language, is a full sister to Grade 2-winning sire Screen King, who placed in the 1979 Wood Memorial and Preakness.
Also prominent in the family is Grade 2 victor Crafty C. T. The runner-up in the 2001 Santa Anita Derby, he likewise placed in such major events as the 2002 Breeders' Cup Sprint, Met Mile and Cigar Mile.
That last stakes placing is appropriate, since this is the extended family of Palace Music, sire of Hall of Famer Cigar.
