Eddie Plesa Jr.
Eddie grew up in horse racing as his father was a jockey and then a trainer. He worked as an assistant for Stanley Hough before going out on his own in 1986. With over 2000 victories, he has been one of the leading trainers in Florida for over two decades and was inducted into the Calder Hall of Fame in 2006. Some of the top horses he has conditioned include Three Rings, Speak Logistics, Hey Byrn, Gotcha Gold , JJ's Dream and Successful Song.
Elvis Trujillo, a native of Panama, is a 2000 graduate of the famed Laffit Pincay Jr. Jockey School. After riding in Mexico and Panama he came to the United States in 2001 and won with his first mount in the states at Hollywood Park in the fall of 2001. In 2007 he won win his first Breeders Cup mount in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Maryfield. He has ridden over 1000 winners and the leading jockey title at Monmouth Park and Calder Racecourse. Other top mounts include Precious Passion, Luna Vega and Gozzip Girl.
Trilogy Stable & Laurie Plesa
Trilogy Stables is made up of the husband and wife team of over 43 years, David and Olga Melin, and longtime Ocala horse woman and breeder Marion Montanari. The Melins have been in the horse business for over 25 years. Laurie Plesa is the wife of longtime Florida leading trainer Eddie Plesa jr.
Itsmyluckyday is by champion Lawyer Ron, who was at his best at 1 1/8 miles, and out of a mare unlikely to help his stamina.
Lawyer Ron was a prominent player on the 2006 Kentucky Derby trail, romping in the Risen Star before sweeping Oaklawn's major preps -- the Southwest, Rebel and Arkansas Derby. He was only 12th behind Barbaro in the Run for the Roses, but exited the race with an ankle injury. Lawyer Ron peaked as a four-year-old when dominating the Oaklawn Handicap, Whitney (in track-record time) and Woodward. Although all of those came at 1 1/8 miles, he did run a gutsy second to Curlin in the 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup, by far his best effort from four career tries at the classic distance.
Sadly, Lawyer Ron stood only two seasons at stud before his untimely death from complications from colic surgery. His first crop included Del Mar Futurity winner Drill, a one-turn specialist, and Stealcase, who scored his biggest win in the 1 1/8-mile Ontario Derby.
Itsmyluckyday is the second registered foal from Viva La Slew. The winner of a two-furlong maiden as a juvenile, Viva La Slew later placed in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint stakes, and never won past a mile.
Viva La Slew is by Doneraile Court, a son of Seattle Slew who inherited his sire's high speed, but apparently not his stamina. Doneraile Court's career highlight was a victory in the one-mile Jerome Handicap, and he was well beaten in his lone foray at 1 1/8 miles. His best offspring, Chilean Horse of the Year Cocoa Beach, was high-class at 1 1/8 miles but didn't venture any farther. His daughters so far are producing sprinter types, with one major exception -- Chilean champion Amani, who stayed as far as 1 3/8 miles, but appears atypical.
Viva La Slew comes from the family of Vicar, the 1999 Florida Derby and Fountain of Youth winner who finished far back in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. French classic-winning miler Astronomer Royal and marathoner Navesink River are also found among the maternal relatives.
