D. Wayne Lukas

Trainer

Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas is a four-time Kentucky Derby winner, and 43rd Derby starter in 2009. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Lukas earned a Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as an assistant basketball coach for two years. He became a teacher and was a head high school basketball coach for nine years, including a seven-year stint in LaCrosse, Wis. He trained and raced horses in South Dakota during the summers before turning to training full-time.

Calvin Borel

Jockey

Borel was born in a small town in South Louisiana and he knew from a very early age he wanted to become a jockey. Borel captured the hearts of millions of Americans when he won his first career Kentucky Derby in 2007 on Street Sense. He followed that up two years later with a rail skimming ride on longshot Mine That Bird to win the 2009 edition. In 2010, he scored his third Kentucky Derby victory in four years aboard Super Saver. Nicknamed “Bo-Rail” for his daring rides along the inside fence, Borel is today’s “king” of the Kentucky Derby.

Westrock Stable

Owner

Owned by the father-son team of Scott and Joe Ford and partner John McKay. Both Scott and Joe were apart of Alltel. Scott served as the president and Chief Executive officer and Joe was CEO from 1987 until 2001. They were both apart of the epic buyout by Verizon Wireless in 2009. The Ford duo had been apart of the Dogwood Stables syndicate, but in 2008 formed Westrock Stables to be more hands on in the business. Became a major player in the sales market.

David Garvin

Breeder

Pedigree

  • By the brilliantly fast sprinter Yankee Gentleman, winner of the six-furlong Pirate's Bounty H. in 1:07 4/5 at Del Mar
  • His top performers from his very first crop are essentially miler types; four-time stakes victor Golden Yank managed to win at up to 1 1/8 miles in the 2008 Oklahoma Derby, and Yankee Bravo captured the 1 1/16-mile California Derby that same year
  • His current three-year-olds include Cardiff Giant, who has placed in the San Rafael S. (G3) and Southwest S. (G3), and Gallant Gent, third in the Norfolk S. (G1) last fall
  • Yankee Gentleman's other stakes runners tend to fall into the sprinter mold, although Gentleman James, runner-up in the 2008 Carry Back S. (G2) at six furlongs, has been performing well at a mile as an older horse these days
  • Tidal Pool is the first registered foal from the unraced Deputy Minister mare Sea Rhythm
  • Deputy Minister, Canada's Horse of the Year as a two-year-old in 1981, has had great success as a sire, with his leading progeny including 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner and sire Awesome Again; champion two-year-old male Dehere, a sire of global import; Hall of Fame filly Go for Wand; 1997 Belmont S. (G1) hero Touch Gold; and Kentucky Oaks (G1) winners Open Mind (1989) and Keeper Hill (1998)
  • Mares by Deputy Minister have produced such stars as two-time Horse of the Year Curlin; champion Rags to Riches, who became the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont in 2007; two more Belmont heroes in Jazil (2006) and Sarava (2002); two-time Japan Cup Dirt (Jpn-G1) victor Kane Hekili; and champion juvenile filly Halfbridled
  • Sea Rhythm is a three-quarter sister to 1 1/4-mile winner Strive, who placed third in the 2003 New Orleans H. (G2)
  • Sea Rhythm's dam is Pirate's Revenge, who landed the 1 1/16-mile Milady H. (G1) and Bayakoa H. (G2) in 1995
  • Pirate's Revenge is a half-sister to stakes queen and Grade 1-placed turf performer Sweet Life, who has gone on to become famous as the dam of champion two-year-old filly Sweet Catomine and reigning Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) winner Life is Sweet
  • Interestingly, Pirate's Revenge has much blood in common with Yankee Gentleman's dam, Key Phrase; as a result, Tidal Pool's pedigree features seldom-seen inbreeding to multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Flying Paster and the mare Bad Seed
