Horse Bio

While others have grabbed headlines on the 2017 Kentucky Derby trail, Untrapped has quietly gone about accumulating Derby leaderboard points.

From four starts, the colt from Steve Asmussen’s stable has won once and finished second three times.

In his first 3-year-old start he beat all but Guest Suite in the Lecomte Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds, and most recently he finished second to Girvin on the same track in the Risen Star Stakes (G2). With 24 points on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, he can probably earn a Derby start with one more good performance.

Bred by Indian Creek and Jonathan Sheppard, Untrapped was bought by his current owner Michael Langford for $125,000 at the 2016 OBS April 2-year-old sale.

Untrapped’s pedigree suggests speed more than stamina. He is from the first crop of Trappe Shot, who after running second in the Haskell Invitational (G1) at three, proved best as a sprinter-miler as a 4-year-old. Untrapped’s first two dams were unraced but his third dam is the outstanding broodmare Yarn (Mr Prospector), whose descendants Minardi, Tale of the Cat, and Johannesburg were all outstanding 2-year-olds or speed horses.

However, in both the Lecomte and the Risen Star, Untrapped went to the line resolutely after settling not far from the speed. He did his best work near the wire, suggesting he might want more distance.

The only Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool list in which Untrapped featured as an individual option was Pool 2, when he finished at 105-1. He may reappear in the Future Wager pools, but he will also be one of the horses that punters who took the “all other” options in the other future wager pools will be cheering for.
