Maxfield Contender Profile

Has any Kentucky Derby contender made a more spectacular visual impression than Maxfield? After rallying from far behind to win his debut at Churchill Downs, Maxfield stepped up in class for the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland and unleashed a freakish burst of acceleration around the far turn, sweeping past rivals in dramatic fashion on the far outside. This move gave Maxfield the lead turning for home, and he continued to pour on speed down the homestretch, pulling clear to score by 5 ½ lengths.

A Godolphin homebred trained by Brendan Walsh, Maxfield missed the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) due to a hoof bruise, but getting some time off at the end of the year isn’t the worst thing for a promising juvenile. A son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense out of a mare by 2006 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Bernardini, Maxfield is bred to relish classic distances and ranks among the most exciting prospects on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
