Horse Profile - Snapper Sinclair
Snapper Sinclair entered the March 24 Louisiana Derby (G2) as one of the contenders to win the race at 9-2 odds and finished fifth after being sent off at 5-1. The bay colt was four and five wide on the turns and maintained the same pace throughout the 1 1/8-mile affair. He currently has 22 Derby points.
After finishing third in the Lecomte Stakes (G3) to open his sophomore season, Snapper Sinclair ran second by a nose in the Risen Star Stakes (G2), both Derby prep races held at the Fair Grounds in 2018. He won two races as a juvenile, including the Turf Showcase Juvenile Stakes, before finishing 12th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).
By leading sire City Zip, the Steve Asmussen-trained Snapper Sinclair ran on the lead the entire way in the 1 1/16-mile Risen Star and just missed in a game duel with 21-1 longshot Bravazo. Snapper Sinclair himself was let go at 41-1 that day despite being 8-1 on the morning long and one of the race favorites. He earned a career-best 98 BRIS speed figure in the Risen Star.
Many two-year-olds blossom and mature in their sophomore season as three-year-olds, and improvement can come rapidly. The change from turf to dirt has been fine for Snapper Sinclair, and one of his owners has expressed much excitement about how he's trained while adding weight and getting stronger. Asmussen has indicated Snapper Sinclair has been training beautifully at Fair Grounds, and believes his colt is stronger and can carry extra distance.
