Kent J. Desormeaux
There are few jockeys in the sport as decorated as Desormeaux. He has won Eclipse Award in multiple categories including Outstanding Apprentice Jockey (1987) and Outstanding Jockey (1989, 1992). He has also been the United States Champion Jockey by Wins a total of three times between 1987 and 1989. In fact, his 589 wins in 1989 still stands as a record in the United States. He rode Triple Crown hopeful Real Quiet in 1998, winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before falling to Victory Gallop at the Belmont Stakes. History would repeat itself in 2008 when Desormeaux accomplished the exact same feat with Big Brown. A year later, he would finally win the Belmont Stakes (2009) aboard Summer Bird. In total Desmoreaux has six Triple Crown wins and four wins at the Breeders Cup events. Other notable mounts include Archer’s Bay, Best Pal, Free House, Kotashaan, Sweetnorthernsaint, and Unirvaled Belle. He is a member of the sport’s Hall of Fame.
